| Memories Of A Gypsy |
"My story began in 1938 in Shanghai, China, as far as my memory can
reach."
Born in Shanghai in 1931, Victor Vishnevsky is a Russian Lovara Rom by culture, an Iranian by
citizenship, and a resident of Brazil. In Memories of a Gypsy he takes us from his childhood in Shanghai, through his family’s
flight from China in 1949, through Burma, India, and Iran, and on to his emigration to Brazil and later world travels. Along
the way he presents his views on his and other Gypsy cultures, and offers his opinions on history and world affairs. Addressed
directly to the reader, Vishnevsky’s account is like a letter written to a friend.
Memories of a Gypsy was originally
written in English. It was published in Portuguese translation in 1999 by Duna Dueto, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
This edition was prepared directly from the original English-language manuscript. 157 pages,
photographs $20.00 ISBN 0-9787728-0-6; ISBN-13 978-0-9787728-0-2
Gypsies
are members of any of a number of ethnic groups referring to themselves in their own language as, among other terms, Rom,
Romnichels, or Ludar.
Typically manuscripts by Gypsies have been polished by non-Gypsy editors before publication.
Salo Press presents these works with minimal editing, allowing the reader to meet the author directly, on his or her own terms.
